Can I enjoy the train even if I’m away? Train ride experience with 360-degree video

Rail operators are facing difficult working conditions as the number of passengers using the railways has decreased due to people refraining from going out due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. In response, this event will carry out a satellite experiment on railways to examine the possibility of a service that would allow people to enjoy railways even when they are away from the train without boarding. In the experiment, participants will watch a 360-degree video showing a train window view of the Isumi Railway running on the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, and we will analyse the effects of the presence and combination of scents and sounds on their emotional state and willingness to pay.

27 Nov 2019: Fake & Reality of Shibuya ~Shibuya Museuming @Shibuya QWS

Shibuya. The city of “symbol” and “abstract”.

Many of us are attracted to the beautiful chaos of ” the fake” and “the real”, but we seldom ask ourselves why. What exactly does “fake” and “real” mean? What is “the fake” and “the real” of Shibuya? Perhaps, it is within this complex entanglement that lies the fascinating truth of the city.

People, architecture, industry, movies, pictures, music, dance, language, discussion… these products of human life seem to add so much value to Shibuya, to the point where Shibuya is no longer just a city… but a “museum”. Shibuya has evolved and always led the forefront of our lives. Only when we face the city can we understand the true value and creativity of our lives.

In this event, we bring you panel discussions with authorities from different creative backgrounds and interactions with the environment.

Event Report Summary

PART 1 : Shibuya Museum Concept

  1. Museum in Japan and UK
    – Cultural financial strength of the country, symbol of national power, cultural activity base
    – Example in London: Sense making and storytelling in UK museum (stimulate visitor, create interactive experiences, foster deeper engagement and further thinking)
  2. Extension of Japanese Museum characteristics
    – In term of ability of attracting visitors, Shibuya city stands out as “planned exhibiton”
  3. Breakthrough from “HAKOMONO” restraint
    – Mobile museum in daily space that does not have building, which can be made possible by removing the ‘HAKO’
  4. Creation of value system
    – Museum: accepts all and mixed things of what left behind as a result of human activities
    – It is important to convey subjective things objectively

PART 2 : FAKE & REALITY

  • What is the attractive point of Shibuya?
    – FICTION, COPY (mass production), FAKE
    – The real value of what was created by FAKE, just like the other world when seeing Halloween event
    – If novel expressions continuously being brought out, it may become an icon of the awakening city
  • Try to see Shibuya from different angle.
    From participants:
    – “I was impressed that the word ‘Platform’ will be the keyword instead of ‘Museum’ from now on” (Graduate school staff in their 30s)
    – “The space in Shibuya, where I usually come to play casually, has never looked as glittering as it is today” (Teenage college student)
    – “Each topic reminded me of the connection with my daily work.” (Museum curator in his 50s)
    – “Halloween, Mona Lisa, literature… it was interesting because the explanations from various perspectives were connected.” (Railway facilities maintenance staff in their 20s).

Event Reflection

(written by Chihiro Wada, Doctoral student of Tokyo Tech)

Discussion about “Mobile Museum” by Prof. Nishino was very intertesting. I thought it was a good example of an exhibition that was freed from ‘HAKOMONO’ restratint. The “mobile” concept is arguably the keyword of the 21st century, but I was surprised that it extended to museums. If “anywhere” is realized, I would like also realize the “anyone” by exhibiting for free.

I was also impressed that Prof. Nishino said that it was interesting because it was “subjective.” Even in the work of Izumi Kizara, which I am currently analyzing, the main characters are looking at things “subjectively” with a short-sighted eye, so it is important to have something that is not worth looking at “objectively”. What is being discussed about as worthwhile is appearing as irrelevant. What is “real”? It feels like an eternal question that seems both easy and not. Perhaps, the question of “What is it for you? What is it for me? What is it for both you and me?” should also be a set.

I pesonally hate Shibuya, so I do not agree with the discourse that Shibuya is “attractive”. However, I think it is a fact that “a lot of people gather”. When I took a Norwegian friend to Shibuya, I remember (she/he) exclaimed “(So many people!) Very Tokyo!” when seeing Scramble Square. Speaking of “Japanese culture”, I personally think that the conflict between the dynasty culture of Kyoto and merchant culture of Edo is interesting. So when I talk about “Japanese culture”, by connecting the broadcast between Kyoto and Shibuya, talking in “Shibuya” seems make the significance come into view.

QWSアカデミア(東工大 presents):Fake & Reality of Shibuya ~渋谷を博物館にする by 野原研

Sense making and storytelling in UK museum
STIMULATE VISITOR / CREATE INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES /
FOSTER DEEPER ENGAGEMENT AND FURTHER THINKING?…

PART 2 : FAKE & REALITY

[OPEN CALL] Join us! 29 Sep 2018: Tokyo TechxCSM Existential Wearables @Shibuya HIKARIE

Tokyo Institute of TechnologyxCentral Saint Martins, University of London of the Arts Industry-University Liaison Experiment Project

Tokyo in 10 years – what are we wearing? —in search of Existential Wearable

Imagine Tokyo in 10 years. What are we wearing and what are we thinking then?

We propose Existential Wearable: EX=to the outside; is=being. It is not something that already exists, but something that does not exist here ( but exists outside) Existence is the term that leads us to the future. What will the wearable be like in the future? We hope it to be assistance to our existence, keeping us free and being free like wind.

Tokyo Institute of Technology and Central Saint Martins, University of London have held café events and a wearable hackathon on the above concept. Discussion production have been conducted in Japanese, English, mixing jargons in art with those in science/technology and exploring various methods.

We are now ready to present the outcome. What is our “existence” going to be like? Join us to discover it!

21-28 July 2018: Entry Now! CSMXTokyoTech Wearable Hackathon

Hackathon (design workshop) will be held in July as part of the ongoing Biotechnology Wearable Fashion project. Full House – application closed, thank you!

“Existential Wearables” : In 10 years, what do people wear in Tokyo?

How will what we wear reflect how we feel, how we act and how we want to connect with others? How can a wearable technology enhance or affect how we want to exist as humans? As city populations and demography continue to increase and technology becomes even more embedded in our lives, how can we secure personal space and maintain a sense of freedom? How will our external apparel reflect our internal world – will what we wear help us to communicate, to disconnect or to cooperate with our surroundings?

The Existential Wearables project explores the interface between the body, technology and society to explore possible manifestations for future wearables. We will be facing a number of social issues such as aging, population decline, elderly nursing, immigration, in 10 years’ time in Tokyo. Our community sites including hospitals, schools, streets, offices etc have their strong and weak, good and bad, positive and negative  aspects of each, as if they show their own light and shadow. Considering the issues, expressing our thoughts and emotions, reflecting Tokyo’s history and culture, playing the ideas, we will create Existential Wearables.

Over 8 days we will bring together people from design, biology, art, engineering and technology to speculate through making, for a ‘hackathon’ of collaborative workshops working with programmable textiles and light emitting materials. Prototypes, designs and ideas created will be developed further and presented at a public event in Hikarie in late September 2018, intended to extend the conversation about life enhancing biotechnologies.

Ulrike Oberlack and Heather Barnett from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London will conduct the hackathon in collaboration with Kayoko Nohara and Hiroshi Tsuda from Tokyo Institute of Technology. Drawing on the ideas generated in the previous fashion cafés and the workshops, students, industry people, artists/designers, and scientists/technologists will work together to build on the emerging ideas, hack materials and build prototypes.

(This is a credit course intended for Tokyo Tech graduate students.)

[OPEN CALL] Biotechnology Wearable Cafe ~New Material~

In ten years, what do people wear in Tokyo?

The sense of value towards life has been changing. The change is due to development such as life maintained and gene manipulation by Biotechnology. Life that continue eternally and death naturally with ease. The discussions will cover diverse aspects of life.

Fashion is beyond trend and culture. It is also deeply involved with life. We face challenges to develop fashion that is suitable for working, protects the seniors, children, the disabled, and especially during disasters.

In the near future, Technology, Fashion, and Wearable will inter-connect with one another. We wonder what kind of living city will Tokyo turn into and what we should discuss and consider now.

“In ten years, what do people wear in Tokyo?”
With this simple theme on our mind, we opened an Art and Science Cafe.
