2025年、東京科学大学では、産学協働プログラム「未来を創る“Hybrid Innovation”」がスタートしました。
今年で5年目になる本プログラムは、東京科学大学とロンドン芸術大学セントラル・セント・マーチンズが共同開発したオリジナルメソッドを基盤に、アート・デザイン・科学技術・社会学の視点を横断しながら、新たな価値創造の可能性を探る全10回の産学協働プログラムです。
今年度は参加企業と東京科学大学の学生が交流を行いながら、それぞれの立場で未来の新規事業の可能性に挑戦します。講義・ワークショップ・プロトタイピングを通して、複雑な社会課題に取り組むための視野とスキルを育みながら、最終的には4月のシンポジウムで各社の提案を発表します。
セッション1の前半では、参加者同士の自己紹介からスタートしました。各自が「好きなプロダクト」を発表し、その魅力や価値を言語化して他者と共有することで、自分の興味や感性を他の参加者と共感する時間となりました。単に物を紹介するだけでなく、「なぜそれに惹かれるのか」をプレゼンすることで、今年度の協働に向け、参加者同士がお互いを理解できる時間になりました。
続いて行われた講義では、科学技術とアート／デザインを往復しながら新しい問いを立ち上げる Hybrid Innovation の基本的な考え方が紹介されました。不確実性の高い現代社会において、複数の領域を横断しながら課題に向き合う“超学際的な姿勢”の重要性が示され、これからの全10回にわたる学びの方向性が共有されました。
また、異なる分野・価値観をつなぐためのキーコンセプトとして「翻訳（Translation）」が取り上げられました。これは、概念や経験を別の表現方法に置き換えることで、その理解を深め、解釈の幅を広げるための思考技法です。
後半では、翻訳の思考法を体験するためのドローイングエクササイズを実施しました。
Hybrid Innovationで開発したカードを活用しながら、最初に描いたイメージを様々な翻訳テクニックで解釈し、モノゴトの解像度を上げていく取り組みです。
このエクササイズでは、単に絵を描くのではなく、表現を変えることで見え方がどう変化するのかを体験し、既存の枠組みを問い直すきっかけをつかむことを目的としています。参加者同士の発表とディスカッションを通じて、多様な解釈が生まれ、Hybrid Innovation が重視する複数の視点を行き来する姿勢が自然と立ち上がりました。
HI2025では、講義と実践ワークを往復しながら、新たな価値創造に向けた思考とプロセスを丁寧に積み重ねています。セッション1で得た知見をもとに、次回もさらに視点を広げ、アイデアを深めていきます。

In 2025, the Institute of Science Tokyo launched the industry-academia collaboration programme ‘Hybrid Innovation’.
Now in its fifth year, this 10-session programme is based on an original methodology jointly developed by Institute of Science Tokyo and Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. It explores the potential for creating new value by integrating perspectives from art, design, science and technology, and sociology.
This year, participating companies and students from Institute of Science Tokyo will engage with one another whilst tackling the potential for new future businesses from their respective perspectives. Through lectures, workshops and prototyping, they will cultivate the vision and skills needed to address complex social issues, culminating in the presentation of each company’s proposals at a symposium in April.
The first half of Session 1 began with participants introducing themselves to one another. Each participant presented their ‘favourite product’, articulating its appeal and value to share with others, creating an opportunity to connect with fellow participants through shared interests and sensibilities. By presenting not just the product itself but also ‘why they are drawn to it’, this served as a time for participants to understand one another ahead of this year’s collaboration.
The subsequent lecture introduced the fundamental concept of ‘Hybrid Innovation’, which involves moving back and forth between science and technology and art/design to formulate new questions. In today’s highly uncertain society, the importance of a ‘Transdisciplinary approach’—one that tackles challenges by crossing multiple fields—was highlighted, and the direction for the upcoming series of ten sessions was shared.
Furthermore, ‘Translation’ was highlighted as a key concept for connecting different fields and values. This is a thinking technique designed to deepen understanding and broaden the scope of interpretation by replacing concepts or experiences with alternative forms of expression.
In the second half, a drawing exercise was conducted to experience this translation-based approach.
Using cards developed by Hybrid Innovation, participants interpreted their initial sketches through various translation techniques, aiming to enhance the resolution of their understanding.
The purpose of this exercise was not merely to draw pictures, but to experience how changing one’s mode of expression alters perception, thereby providing an opportunity to re-examine existing frameworks. Through presentations and discussions among participants, diverse interpretations emerged, and the attitude of moving between multiple perspectives—which Hybrid Innovation values—naturally took shape.
At HI2025, we are carefully building up the thinking and processes required for creating new value by moving back and forth between lectures and practical workshops. Building on the insights gained in Session 1, we will further broaden our perspectives and deepen our ideas in the next session.
