AY 2024 begins!!!

April 1, 2024 marks a new academic year at our institute. Various things are in store, and among them will be the merger of Tokyo Institute of Technology and the Tokyo Medical and Dental University. With the official merger scheduled from fall 2024, the Institute of Science Tokyo will begin.

Meanwhile, we have also various updates in our laboratory. Among them would be the resumption of seminars/groupworks, welcoming new transferees and exchange students, and initiation of a new project related to the deepening of understanding of atmospheric chemistry in cities.

During the seminar, students update the whole laboratory of their individual researches. In group works, students will also be deepening their knowledge of the boundary layer through group readings of the famous, “Boundary Layer Theory” textbook written by H. Schlichting all the way from the  1950s. To expand the students network and advance their communication skills, we hold both seminars and group works with Kanda Laboratory.

From this year, we have officially hosted two senior undergraduate students for them to fulfil their graduation requirement, which is to complete an independent research project. Both Lueangratana Pongsapak (Pun) and So Kayo have already begun their participation in the lab activities prior to April. We also welcome Shikan Nagata, who previously belong to a lab that deals with chemistry and renewable energy. To start his works, Nagata-kun has been actively investigating air chemistry across Japan with us. Lastly, Emile F. Vreeburg and Akira R. Trinidad have joined as exchange students from Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, and University of the Philippine, respectively. They are hosted in the lab and are participating in exchange programs organized by Tokyo Institute of Technology. Welcome Pun, Kayo, Nagata-kun, Emile, and Akira! Their full names are listed on our members page.

Thanakrit Yoongsomporn (c/o Bank), who did his independent research project with us, has successfully obtained his bachelor’s degree and is now continuing with us for his Master’s degree. He will also be joining a domestic conference to be held in Hokkaido, Japan, in the last week of May. He will continue to advance his work that he initiated in his senior undergraduate year.

Lastly, together with our students, we have embarked in collaboration with JAMSTEC (Dr. Prabir K. Patra and Dr. Masayuki Takigawa), Center for Environmental Science in Saitama (c/o Dr. Natsumi Kawano and Dr. Akio Yamagami), and University of Tsukuba (c/o Dr. Doan Quang Van) to conduct atmopsheric air quality modeling over cities, beginning with Tokyo.
