3rd year students came to visit our laboratory!

During the final week of November 2023, 3rd year undergraduate students from the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering (TSE) came to visit our laboratory. In this quarter, Zi, Fahim, Mee-in, Sitchai, Vinnie, Junyang, and Keito visited many laboratories to learn about the focus of each laboratory.

In our laboratory, they experienced data processing, model implementation, observation, and analyses. During the first day of their visit, they were introduced to jupyter notebooks that quickly summarizes a few of the topics conducted with the laboratory. With the help of the laboratory members, the visiting students were able to visualize climate model outputs, detect land cover changes in their region-of-interest, and walk with a device that monitors their position and the weather.

On December 1, 2023, they presented their experience and their findings. The interesting point was that they were not tasked to deliver a talk. They were simply asked to share their experience and their findings. Based on their results, we were able to discuss deeply about the possible causes of urbanization in the area (e.g. Iruma, Tokyo and Sri Lanka), the heterogeneity and mechanisms for localized warming/cooling, and the significance of urbanization in future climate projections.

It was a fun final discussion, which eventually led to a slight delay in our lunchtime. Apologies for that, and we hope for the best for the students.
