Joint seminar with Kusaka lab of Tsukuba University

Together with Kanda laboratory, our laboratory hosted a joint seminar with Kusaka laboratory of University of Tsukuba last November 29, 2023 at Tokyo Tech. Kusaka lab is led by Prof. Hiroyuki Kusaka, the proponent of the widely known single-layer urban canopy model of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Our lab has been using this model extensively and made improvements arising from a previous collaboration with Kusaka lab.

Together with Kusaka-sensei, around 20 participants comprised of his students and staff visited us at Ookayama campus. We held a joint-seminar allowing students to share ongoing research findings, obtain and exchange feedback, and build connections among each together. During the seminar, we heard student-led talks about urban precipitation, mountain meteorology over Biwa lake, human mobility analyses, land-cover detection, and urban climate modeling over major cities in Southeast Asia. Inspiring speeches were also delivered during the start of the seminar by Prof. Manabu Kanda and Prof. Hiroyuki Kusaka.

We highly appreciate the gesture of Kusaka laboratory for travelling all the way from Tsukuba to our campus. Thank you Kusaka-sensei and Kusaka lab students! Special thanks to the students who made the event possible, Tasuku Watanabe (Kanda lab), Ryota Karube, and Keishi Otomo; and Okamoto-san for delivering us delicious lunch for the day.

The idea of holding a joint seminar came about when Watanabe-san, Karube-san, and Otomo-san were having dinner at the recently held ICUC conference in Sydney. Another seminar will be held during the early month of 2024. During that time, it will be our turn to travel to the University of Tsukuba. We hope that through this endeavour we can find avenues for collaboration with Kusaka laboratory, in addition to our existing strong collaboration with Kanda laboratory.
