The academic year 2022

This has been a year of progress and slow transition away from the difficult COVID-19 pandemic. With the students, we could finally work face-to-face with doctoral students (or would-be doctoral students) able to travel domestic and abroad for research collaboration and conference. Last year, we also hosted Dr. Lucille Alonso in her JSPS summer program, which was delayed for almost 2 years due to the pandemic. During the same timing, we were also be visited by Dr. Florent Renard, Lucille’s former supervisor from the University of Lyon. We had an opportunity to conduct walking observations with our bachelor student, Janat Taerakul, and Master’s student, Ryoga Hiroki, and advance our heat-stress modelling. We hope to publish the findings very soon.

Furthermore, we have been slowly building connections with Dr. Paul Griffith from the University of Cambridge for global climate modelling and Prof. Makoto Okumura from Tohoku University. Collaborations with laboratories within our department, such as with Prof. Manabu Kanda, Prof. Shinya Hanaoka, and Dr. Sunkyung Choi are actively ongoing.

Below are the list of our students who have earned their respective degrees.

UNUBOLD Erdenebeleg, Bachelors
Topic: Anthropogenic heat effects on simulated global climate using the Community Earth System Model

JANAT Taerakul (co-advised with Prof. Kanda), Bachelors
Topic: Heat-risk modeling in downtown areas of Tokyo and Lyon on extremely hot summer days of 2022

HIROKI Ryoga, Masters
Topic: Investigation of long-term thermal comfort throughout Japan based on Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI)

Lastly, it has been a pleasure to work with and educate our students. Below is a photo of the recent graduation held last March 27, 2023. The photo was taken in front of the main building of Tokyo Tech. Members in the photo also include graduates from Kanda laboratory, Alexandros Makedonas and Tasuku Watanabe, who will continue further studies as doctoral students.
