My first onsite symposium participation in the corona era

Scenes during the day trip to the on-site symposium

On September 13 and 14, 2022, Alvin-sensei, Lucille, and I joined the 1st Urban Extreme Weather Symposium hosted by the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, which was jointly held with the 18th typhoon-related researchers’ meeting. Our group participated after an invitation by Prof. Hiroyuki Kusaka of the University of Tsukuba. It was my first time to attend a symposium on-site after the outbreak of COVID-19.

In the symposium, many researchers presented their latest findings on typhoon, snowdrift, landslide due to extreme rain fall, and many other topics. With the title “Initial numerical investigation of urban effects on typhoons: the case of Jebi”, I presented the first attempt of our lab to study interactions between urban areas and typhoon by using the urban weather model and various datasets which we developed in recent years. We receive a lot of feedback on how to improve the simulation results and also clarification on our methodology. Personally, I had casual talk with some researchers from other institute. I hope that these connections will bring a lot of collaboration opportunities in the future.

Regarding our lab’s weather model, a different research using the model was presented online in the AOGS 19th Annual Meeting on August 2. The title was “Impact of urbanization on the future thermal environment of worldwide megacities”. We will update you with the latest model code and dataset as soon as possible. So stay tuned!
