Climate-change-related filmshowing for students

A film showing of a documentary entitled, “Newtok” will be held on-campus on July 14, 2022 from 16:15 to 18:15.

Produced by Patagonia and directed by Andrew Burton and Michael Kirby Smith, the documentary focuses on the issues faced by an indigenous village in Alaska called Newtok. Newtok is an Alaskan village of the native Yup’ik people close to the Bering Sea. Rising sea levels and permafrost melt-off are quickly swallowing their home village. The situation of Newtok is also occurring in multiple remote locations around the world.

In the film showing, an open discussion will also be held to share impressions of the film, establish the message intended by the film, and build connections among the students.

Pre-registration is required and a seating capacity of 40 is set. The target audience are students of Tokyo Institute of Technology. For further details on how to register, visit here.

The event is strategically held as a tribute for the upcoming “Sea Day” (national holiday on July 18, 2022) in Japan. It is organized by the Global Urban Climatogy lab, Cross lab c/o Dr. May Carlon, and the Tokyo Tech Academy for Leadership (TOTAL) program.
