Georgia Institute of Technology Leadership Program Spring 2024

Vinnie Chuawanta, GSEP 4th Year Student

Georgia Tech

A dynamic city where innovation meets rich history, cultural diversity thrives, and Southern hospitality welcomes all—yep, that’s Atlanta! Hi, I’m Vinnie. I recently had the extraordinary opportunity to immerse myself in this amazing city. From March 5 to March 15, I participated in the Georgia Institute of Technology Leadership Program, an experience that has profoundly reshaped my perspective on leadership and personal development.

Discovering My Leadership Potential

The Leadership Program at Georgia Tech was a whirlwind of activities and learning: CliftonStrengths workshop, Foundations of Leadership Class, Grand Challenge Course, Leadership Challenge Course, and The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) Class. Each session was designed to uncover our personal strengths and enhance our understanding of cultural dynamics, providing practical tools for future challenges. This focus on self-awareness and cultural understanding has not only broadened my perspective but also equipped me with invaluable skills to navigate diverse environments.

A Glimpse into American Innovation

InVenture Prize

One of the highlights of my trip was attending the InVenture Prize at Georgia Tech, an Emmy Award-winning competition often described as the “American Idol for Nerds.” The atmosphere was electric, filled with the innovative spirit and entrepreneurial drive of the students. I was particularly inspired by LilyPad Health, the winner of this year’s competition, for their at-home, non-invasive menstrual blood screening tool. As a female myself, I found their mission to destigmatize menstruation and improve women’s health deeply moving.

Walking in the Footsteps of Greatness

The weather was pretty cold that day.

Our journey through Atlanta was not just about academic growth; it was also a deep dive into the rich history of civil rights. Visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park was a profoundly moving experience. Seeing the statue of the protest marchers, illuminated by a light symbolizing hope and progress, left a lasting impression on me. The burial site of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King, inscribed with “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream,” served as a powerful reminder of their enduring legacy.

Exploring the APEX Museum

Successful females in history ~

At the APEX Museum, we were transported through time, learning about African and African American history. The exhibits, ranging from Africa’s ancient civilizations to the harrowing realities of the transatlantic slave trade, were both educational and emotional. Walking through the tunnel that mimicked the cries and sounds of the sea during the Middle Passage was particularly poignant, highlighting the resilience and strength of those who suffered.

Immersed in Civil and Human Rights

Raising our hands for justice and equality!

Our visit to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights was another highlight. The museum’s design, with its curved walls symbolizing protection and unity, set the stage for an immersive experience. From the “Lunch Counter” sit-in simulation to the global human rights exhibit, each display underscored the importance of activism and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.

The Legacy of President Jimmy Carter

The Carter Center visit offered insights into the humanitarian efforts of the 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Learning about the Center’s work in conflict resolution, democracy promotion, and health improvement was inspiring. It reinforced the idea that compassionate leadership can lead to significant global change.

Aviation and Refreshment

Exploring the Delta Flight Museum was a journey through the evolution of aviation. The immersive design, including an aircraft-like entrance, and the preserved artifacts showcased Delta’s commitment to innovation and honoring its history. It was really interactive, and we had an immense amount of fun!

Healing our inner child

The World of Coca-Cola was equally fascinating. This is what I learned: It wasn’t just about a beverage; it was about a brand that embodies joy, community, and innovation. Tasting Coca-Cola products from around the world was “the experience. We drank an excessive amount of cola—probably half a year’s worth in just one day!

The Beltline and Culinary Adventures

The Beltline, envisioned by Georgia Tech alum Ryan Gravel, is a testament to innovative urban redevelopment. Walking along the trails, I could see how this project has revitalized Atlanta, connecting diverse neighborhoods and promoting sustainability.

Ponce City Market was a culinary delight. From Southern comfort food to international cuisines, the market offered a feast for the senses. Sampling the local delicacies, especially the fried chicken, was an extraordinary experience that I will remember fondly. It’s the best fried chicken I have ever had!

Best Part

One of the most memorable parts of my time there was the incredible bond I formed. I feel incredibly fortunate to have met these amazing souls. We took way too many photos, capturing every fun and meaningful moment. Seeing how close everyone had gotten together was truly heartwarming. It was sad knowing that we would have to go on separate ways, but everyone promised to stay in touch (and we still do!). I truly believe that these connections and experiences are what make the exchange program so special. You’ll find yourself growing in ways you never imagined, both personally and academically.

Conclusion

My time at Georgia Tech and exploring Atlanta was both enlightening and inspiring. The city’s rich history, coupled with its innovative spirit, offers valuable lessons in leadership, resilience, and the importance of cultural understanding. This experience has profoundly influenced my perspective and will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors. For those of you who wish to study abroad, I know it can be daunting to step out of your comfort zone, but trust me, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Thank you, Georgia Tech and Atlanta, for an unforgettable journey!
