The latest brochure of the Global Scientist and Engineers Program can be downloaded here.
Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo), formerly Tokyo Tech, has begun implementing the Global Scientist and Engineer Program (GSEP), an international bachelor of engineering degree program, in April 2016. This program allows qualified international students who have little or no proficiency in the Japanese language to enrol in the bachelor’s degree program at Tokyo Tech and pursue an engineering degree in Japan.
GSEP is a program for international students striving to be scientists and engineers with a global perspective in transdisciplinary fields (engineering science). Proficiency in the Japanese language is not required for admission as courses are taught in English. However, students are required to study introductory Japanese as part of this program, and they are encouraged to further familiarize themselves with the Japanese language as well as Japanese culture throughout the course of their studies. Students who successfully acquire advanced Japanese skills may take courses taught in Japanese as well.
Eight students will be awarded MEXT scholarship for four years. These students will be exempted from paying the application, admission, and tuition fees. A few students without MEXT scholarships may also be admitted to this program. In this case, students may apply for other scholarships after their admission.
Recipients of GSEP will belong to the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering which includes science, engineering, and management courses. GSEP is a transdisciplinary degree program not limited to any specific science or engineering field. Transdisciplinary knowledge is essential for scientists and engineers to solve real-world global problems, as well as acquire intercultural leadership skills and a future vision. Many of the core courses will be conducted through project-based learning or hands-on formats covering various fields of science and engineering.
Department
The Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering (TSE) in the School of Environment and Society offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs for scientists and engineers with a global perspective in a transdisciplinary field. Both science and engineering are transdisciplinary in nature. For example, the field of robotics requires knowledge of mechanics and electronics. Sometimes, even knowledge of biology is necessary. The nuclear technology utilizes knowledge from various fields, such as physics, chemistry, material science, mechanics, architecture, and infrastructure. Environmental engineering requires knowledge from various fields of science and engineering, as well as social science, such as economics, political science, and sociology. Furthermore, the impact of science and engineering are global. Therefore, we are looking for talented students with:
- Interest and determination to solve global problems through science and engineering
- Willingness to explore and create new knowledge
- Interest in understanding the cultures and values of others
- An open mind for new activities and new ways of thinking
Curriculum
In the TSE department subjects are prepared in order to equip students with necessary skills and knowledge to do real problem solving on a project. The department offers subjects in the fields of engineering mathematics, fundamentals for Applied Science and Engineering, and fundamentals for Creative Skills and Management. The Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering is part of the School of Environment and Society. More information about the TSE department can be found in the TSE Brochure.
During the fourth year of their undergraduate study, GSEP students will affiliate themselves with their chosen research laboratory according to their research interest. They can freely choose among the diverse field of specialisations of the TSE faculty listed here. They will work on their special research project in the laboratory of their chosen adviser from the TSE department wherein they will can have an environment which enables them to truly concentrate on their own research. They will be also able to interact and engage in research activities with other members of the laboratory, many of whom are also international students like them.
After completing the required number of units in the undergraduate course and successfully completing the thesis project, the GSEP student will earn a degree of Bachelor of Engineering from the university.
New Course: Biological Science
A new course, titled “Biological Science”, will be offered in 3Q 2023 by Dept. of Life Science and Technology at Science Tokyo and it is expected that GSEP students can earn credits from this course. Please click here for more details about this course.
