What is Trans-disciplinary Education?
by Jeremy Gavriel

Probably, jeremy2some of you share the same question and response as me. ‘What is Trans-disciplinary? Never heard of it’. This reaction is normal. I hope this article could enlighten you and encourage you to join me in the program!

The main purpose of getting a university education is to deepen our understanding of a certain or specific subject or major. However, the approach of the trans-disciplinary program is different. Through trans-disciplinary education (TE), we are encouraged to seek collaboration outside the bounds of our major, explore different perspectives, express and exchange ideas, and gain new insights. A simple analogy to this would be in deciding whether to solve just 1 face of a Rubik’s Cube or to solve all 6.

What are the advantages of TE? Why should we learn it? In my opinion, it acts as a vector space for students who are keen to know more than what ‘others’ do. This education style does not limit students to the path they’ve chosen in the beginning, which makes college life much more interesting and flexible. The outcome of such education is the ability to solve diverse, challenging, contemporary issues. In addition, the complex problems we are facing now calls for the need of integrative thinkers who can see the connections between contrasting fields and develop new solutions based on a wide range of knowledge (such as on how one face of the Rubik’s cube relates with another).

Another illustration comes into mind. Pursuing a specific major is like planting a big tree. Whatever we learn later are like small branches that grow on the big tree. Earning a degree in TE is like having a strong ‘knowledge’ foundation, and any major we engage in afterwards resemble the buildings that will be constructed upon it.

To summarize, TE is surely something ‘divergent’, where no borders are drawn between majors. This program gives access to a broad field of expertise, allowing us to have a solid and vast background to make cooperation with people from different fields possible. After reading this, try reflecting upon these questions: ‘What am I interested in learning about? Can TE facilitate me in pursuing such interest?’
