Farid-sensei’s Farewell Party

Last February 9, 2018, a farewell party was held for Dr. Farid Triawan. Farid-sensei will be moving back to Jakarta to take on another challenging chapter for his career. He has greatly contributed to the formation and management of GSEP. He has left a deep impression and has grown to be highly respected and admired by the GSEP students and faculty. Despite being physically separated from the program, he promises to continually assist to the further improvement of GSEP.

The party was held in one of the large rooms of the campus. It was participated by the GSEP students, faculty, staff, and his family. In addition to the Tokyo Tech faculty, Prof. Greg, a visiting professor from Georgia Tech, also joined the event. The party started with a welcome toast and greeting by Prof. Naoya Abe, who has been the mentor for the GSEP lecturers including Farid-sensei. Appetizing Indonesian food was served buffet style. Students together with their senseis had a very relaxing and enjoyable dining.

After dining, Prof. Kikuo Kishimoto delivered his farewell speech. Kishimoto-sensei,  former dean of the School of Environment and Society and a major contributor to the implementation of GSEP, was Farid-sensei’s former academic supervisor when he was still a PhD student. It is inspiring to see a strong relationship between teacher and student in that moment. Students also extended their gratitude to Farid-sensei. Farid-sensei finally gave his speech, sharing about his student life, his time spent in Torishima Pump, his relationship w/ his co-workers and his sensei, and his advice to those who are continuing in the program.

The party was also enlivened by the performances, jokes, and conversations from the students. The highlight of the evening was a rare performance by Farid-sensei himself.

Finally, it was time for Farid-sensei’s family to go home. The party ended with a lot of wonderful memories and goodbyes.

Farid-sensei, this is not the end. The friendship, contributions and seeds you have sown in GSEP will live on.
