About joining the Cross lab

Prof. Cross accepts several undergraduate and graduates students each year into the lab. Both Japanese and international students are welcome to apply to join the lab, however, the number of student desks in the lab is limited and it is very competitive to be accepted into the lab. Please note that for international students that IPGA/MEXT scholarships are very limited so if you are seeking a scholarship, please also consider applying for scholarships in your home country offered by the Japanese embassies, JICA, JSPS and foundations. For MEXT scholarships, preference is given to Tokyo Tech partner institutions graduates from Asian universities. Self-financed students are welcome to apply to join the lab particularly for the doctoral program.

If you are interested in joining my lab, I ask that when you contact me by email please send me your resume and also include in your message answers to the questions below to help me assess your abilities, motivation and goals.

1. What are you currently doing (work, research, student)?
2. Which Tokyo Tech program are you applying for (IGPA, IPGC, exchange, summer, research, other)?
3. When is the deadline for the application and when do you want to be admitted (Sept./April Year)?
4. If apply for a graduate degree, why do you want to pursue a Master or Doctoral degree in my group?
5. Why do you feel you are qualified to pursue a graduate degree?
6. What is your intended graduate major at Tokyo Tech (Energy Science and Engineering Course, Materials Course, Global Engineering for Development, Environment and Society Course)?
7. What is the topic of your proposed research, what is your research approach to address it, and why is your approach to pursue this research unique?
8. How would you support your stay financially (scholarship, self-financed, part-time work)? MEXT scholarships are very limited and geared to academic scholars with high GPA e.g. top ranking students at your univ.
9. How would pursuing a graduate degree or research experience fit into your career plans? What would you do after completion?
10. Are you interested in learning the Japanese language and culture?
11. Are you currently in discussions with any other faculty member at Tokyo Tech or another institution about graduate degree admission?
12. What is your goal regarding the number of publications you want to publish on your proposed research if you were admitted to Tokyo Tech? What are the journals you would target? What are their impact factors?

Periodically, I host visiting faculty on sabbiticals if our education, research interests align and the stay is win-win for my dept. and the institution.
