Last September 15 to 21, 2024, our group together with an alumnus, doctoral and potential doctoral students, went to visit Indonesia to participate in the 3rd International Seminar on Earth Science and Technology 2024 (ISEST) organized by the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), a leading university in Indonesia. While working hard on building connections and sharing our research works, we also took the opportunity to conduct moving thermal-comfort measurements related to Hiroki’s work. We highly appreciate the hospitality and kind treatment of our friends and new-found friends in ITB.

We were kindly invited by a former Kanda lab member and our close collaborator, Dr. I Dewa Gede Agung Junnaedhi (a.k.a. Jun-san). He recently plays a significant role in the Deparment of Meteorology in ITB. Alvin, Hiroki, Jin, and Satoru (now working as an assistant professor in Shibaura Institute of Technology), presented their research works and insights on urban climate to a multidisciplinary international audience comprised of scientists, faculty members, and students. A program can be found here. In the conference, we were exposed to massive research collaborations that cover various areas of earth sciences, such as disaster management and blue carbon initiatives. The conference was held on September 17 – 18, 2024.

Our group actually arrived on September 15, 2025, two days before the conference. This was because another purpose of our visit was to conduct a dynamic thermal comfort investigation as well in Indonesia. This was held immediately, a day after the conference. While the conference was ongoing, Alvin and Satoru also delivered guest lectures to undergraduate students of the Department of Meteorology regarding overview of urban climate and thermal comfort.
The whole experiment and the whole visit could not have been made possible if not for the kindness, drive, and generosity of Jun-san, his co-workers, and his students. They were very supportive of us from the moment we landed and left Indonesia.
We hope that we will be able to see them again and work with them in the future. Wishing all success to Jun-san, ITB, and its students. Teri Makasi! It has been a pleasure visiting Indonesia before the start of the work week.
