Celebrating Innovation and Collaboration at the HI 2025 Symposium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The HI Symposium on 10th April 2026 celebrated the end of the 2025 Hybrid Innovation programme (HI)<\/a> at the Institute of Science Tokyo. Held in Mishima Hall every year, the event showcased our unique approach to designing and delivering sessions. Together, we reflected on the collective journey of the programme and celebrated the participants\u2019 achievements by highlighting their group projects and proudly awarding official diplomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event opened with an endorsement by the president of our university, Prof. Naoto Ohtake, who highlighted the importance of working across disciplines and using the lessons of art and design to foster innovation in science, technology and business. This transdisciplinary approach was pioneered by HI Director Prof. Kayoko Nohara and her colleagues at the Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering department. More recently, the university has introduced a new vision-driven framework for cross-disciplinary research and education called Visionary Initiatives<\/a>, which encourages researchers to begin by envisioning a desirable future and then collaborate across fields to realize it through scientific inquiry and social implementation. Now in its 6th year, the HI programme encapsulates this philosophy and offers a tangible approach to generate creativity training and knowledge exchange with participating companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HI Creative Director Dr Giorgio Salani discussed ‘the mechanism of HI’ to illustrate how the principles of the programme are translated into concrete activities. The sessions expose corporate participants to academic and industry experts in diverse fields. This year we have hosted a linguist, a design philosopher, two artists, an architect, a medical professional, a metallurgy engineer, a bio-sensing scientist, a speculative designer, and a business innovation scholar. We learned aspects of their work but most of all our aim is to extract their ways of seeing, their unique perspectives and methodologies: what innovation means in their field and how the ways they develop solutions may differ from those of experts in other areas. This is delivered through practical activities inspired by art and design pedagogy and theories of experiential learning. Bespoke exercises designed alongside contributors help assimilate new perspectives and methods, while short lectures and open discussion help cement key terms and concepts. In Salani’s talk, the process in which a regular contributor to the programme develops her paintings illustrated the affinity of self-driven inquiry in art and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HI Assistant Director Kohei Kanomata gave a panoramic of the activities included in the programme, from the pillars that guide our approach to the content and schedule of the sessions. His talk introduced the group work called HI Practice, a speculative design exercise that runs parallel to the theoretical content, in which the participants engage in brainstorming aimed at developing hybrid ways of thinking and explore the creative tools introduced in each session. Their final group work was exhibited at the symposium and their presentations formed the heart of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the HI Practice, each of the 4 teams was linked to a fictitious company with a well-defined profile operating in the year 2035 and assigned to one of 4 industries: food, insurance, education and sport. Over multiple sessions and through intensive group work, the teams developed original speculative services to address issues related to the theme of wellbeing. The teams proudly showcased their ideas through vibrant posters and diagrams, fielding thoughtful questions from an engaged audience of academics and partners. The HI organisers offered constructive feedback through spider charts and qualitative observations. And in a thrilling first for the programme, the top-performing team was awarded the inaugural 2025 HI Practice Awards – a proud moment for everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her concluding speech, Prof. Nohara located HI within the wider context of the university and renewed our dedication to foster ever stronger connections with industry partners. The STADHI research hub under which HI operates is expanding its offer and reach with new services and an augmented organizational structure to be announced in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2025 HI Symposium concluded on a high note with the awarding of diplomas by Dean Prof. Mitsuyasu Iwanami, who offered a few words of endorsement and expressed his gratitude to all attendees. We continue to cultivate close relationships with both current and past participating companies, which now join our HI Alumni network, a community of 12 companies and 83 employee participants built over the past five years. Recruitment for the upcoming year has already begun, and we look forward to welcoming both returning and prospective companies to the new cohort after the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
