On Tuesday, 23 December 2025, Session 6 of \u2018Hybrid Innovation: Creating the Future\u2019 2025 was held at the Institute of Science Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This programme is a 10-part industry-academia collaboration based on an original methodology jointly developed by the Institute of Science Tokyo and Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. It aims to create future value by moving back and forth between the perspectives of art, design, science and technology, and sociology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Session 6, we welcomed Professor Yuhei Hayamizu as a guest lecturer and explored the potential of new sensory technologies from the perspective of research that bridges biology and electronics. Professor Hayamizu specialises in the interface between biology and nanotechnology, and is engaged in research into sensor technology with a particular focus on the sense of smell. During the lecture, he explained how the \u2018senses\u2019 we use in our daily lives can be understood scientifically and implemented as technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the practical session, we experienced a portion of the olfactory assessment used in the national examination for certified odour assessors. Participants began by encountering smells they had never encountered before and attempting to describe them in words. The session highlighted the challenge of sharing olfactory experiences\u2014which are often vague and subjective\u2014through language, whilst also underscoring the importance of translating sensory perceptions into words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on this experience, a discussion took place regarding the potential business applications of olfactory sensors and the fields in which they might be utilised in the future. Whilst considering the breadth of potential applications\u2014including healthcare, the environment, daily life and industry\u2014participants shared their views on the value that technologies dealing with \u2018invisible\u2019 and \u2018difficult-to-quantify\u2019 elements might hold for society in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second half, as part of HI Practice, each team undertook an exercise to re-examine the innovation ideas they are currently considering in a more structured manner. The concepts of \u2018agents\u2019 and \u2018connectors\u2019 were used in this session. An \u2018agent\u2019 refers to any element involved in a service or product, such as people, objects or events, whilst a \u2018connector\u2019 represents the relationships through which these elements are linked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants listed the individual elements comprising their ideas one by one and visualised the interactions between them. By mapping out these interrelationships from such a broad perspective, previously unrecognised connections and previously unconsidered spheres of influence came to light, allowing the idea as a whole to emerge as a single ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the session, participants shared an experiential understanding of the process of starting from the highly physical and subjective realm of sensation and connecting it to technology and social structures. The approach to dealing with the invisible and the perspective for organising complex relationships overlapped, making this a session that took the \u2018ability to think with a broad perspective\u2019\u2014the goal of Hybrid Innovation\u2014to a deeper level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At HI2025, we are carefully building up the thinking and processes required for new value creation by moving back and forth between lectures and practical workshops. Building on the insights gained in Session 6, we will broaden our perspectives even further and deepen our ideas in the next session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
