On Tuesday, 9 December 2025, Session 5 of \u2018Hybrid Innovation: Creating the Future\u2019 2025 was held at the Institute of Science Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This programme is a 10-part industry-academia collaboration based on an original methodology jointly developed by the Institute of Science Tokyo and Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. It aims to create future value by moving back and forth between the perspectives of art, design, science and technology, and sociology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Session 5, we welcomed Professor Ikuo Kobayashi from the Institute of Science Tokyo as a guest lecturer, providing an opportunity to learn about the cutting edge of materials development and how scientists approach their research. At the start of the session, we visited Professor Kobayashi\u2019s laboratory, where we were introduced to the various pieces of research equipment used in his daily work. Immersed in a research environment they rarely encounter, the participants gained a first-hand understanding of how materials are observed, evaluated and understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was particularly striking during the laboratory tour and the subsequent lecture was the realisation that materials development is not simply a matter of \u2018creating new substances\u2019, but rather a process of carefully drawing out the potential of materials through multifaceted measurement and observation. It was demonstrated that by utilising different \u2018measuring sticks\u2019\u2014such as microscopes for observing microstructures, testing equipment for measuring mechanical properties, and measuring instruments for controlling temperature and environmental conditions\u2014completely different aspects of the same material can be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was followed by the HI Practice session, during which we split into teams to work on story-making, whilst organising the perspectives and discussions accumulated during the previous sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this part, starting from a vision of society and well-being in 2035, we systematically re-examined the context within which our themes could be realised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, we reviewed our previous discussions and research, scrutinising the challenges we face whilst investigating existing services and initiatives. Building on this, each team discussed what is lacking for the future and what changes are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, regarding the proposed services and initiatives, we repeatedly asked questions such as \u2018Who will use this?\u2019 and \u2018What other people or entities will be affected?\u2019, shifting our focus from users to the wider network of relationships. This process gave rise to multifaceted interpretations and stories with greater depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, we organised how these various characters and elements interconnect and what kind of value cycle they generate, and each team briefly shared the story they are currently developing. This exercise is not intended to finalise ideas, but rather to explore our thinking and lay the groundwork for further development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through HI Practice, participants reaffirmed the importance of carefully reweaving the stories and relationships behind a \u2018service\u2019 or \u2018solution\u2019 before considering the service or solution itself. The stories born here will serve as a crucial starting point for developing concrete ideas in future sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In HI2025, we are carefully building up our thinking and processes for creating new value by moving back and forth between lectures and practical exercises. Building on the insights gained in Session 5, we will broaden our perspectives further and deepen our ideas in the next session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
