On Tuesday, 18 November 2025, Session 4 of \u2018Hybrid Innovation: Creating the Future\u2019 2025 was held at the Institute of Science Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This programme is a 10-part industry-academia collaboration based on an original methodology jointly developed by the Institute of Science Tokyo and Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. It aims to create future value by moving back and forth between the perspectives of art, design, science and technology, and sociology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this occasion, we welcomed Dr. Nathan Cohen from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, and artist Reiko Kubota to deliver a lecture and lead a practical workshop on \u2018beauty\u2019 and \u2018experience\u2019 in art. Drawing on Ms Kubota\u2019s work, it was demonstrated that beauty is not merely visual pleasure, but rather a holistic experience shaped through the exploration of materials and techniques; in particular, the theme of \u2018Transcendental\u2019 was introduced as a central concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This concept refers to an experience unique to art, one that can only be realised when it encompasses non-verbal information such as bodily sensations and the atmosphere of a space\u2014elements that can never be replicated on a computer or smartphone screen. The participants were deeply impressed by the account of how artists meticulously translate their own experiences and sensations into their materials, continually experimenting to convey messages to the viewer that cannot be put into words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the lecture, we held a practical workshop on creating three-dimensional works using wood, themed \u2018A Bridge to the Future\u2019. The theme was not merely about form; equal emphasis was placed on the beauty of the concept\u2014namely, what attitude one holds towards the future and what possibilities one envisions. Work progressed in mixed groups comprising students and corporate participants, and the shapes and structures of the completed bridges reflected each group\u2019s unique interpretation. During the critique, participants discussed the meaning behind the forms and their intentions regarding what they sought to connect for the future; it was an opportunity to experience how diverse forms of \u2018beauty\u2019 can emerge from a single theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second half, as part of HI Practice, discussions centred on future wellbeing took place within the teams formed during the previous session. The exercise involved analysing the profiles of randomly assigned \u2018users\u2019 and re-examining the relationship between their respective industries and these users from a perspective they had not previously considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of this exercise was not to determine the final target audience for a service, but rather to broaden our horizons by considering values we had not previously recognised and unexpected user needs, thereby re-examining the relationship between industry and users from a fresh perspective. By delving deeper into user profiles we would not normally pay attention to, we were able to identify new possibilities and unmet needs within our own fields, giving rise to the \u2018engagement with diverse perspectives\u2019 that Hybrid Innovation holds dear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the session, participants experienced the depth of artistic engagement and the process of reconstructing future user profiles, fostering an attitude that embraces the future broadly from both the perspectives of expression and conceptualisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At HI2025, we are carefully building up the thinking and processes required for new value creation by alternating between lectures and practical workshops. Building on the insights gained in Session 4, we will further broaden our perspectives and deepen our ideas in the next session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
