On Tuesday, 21 October 2025, Session 2 of \u2018Hybrid Innovation: Creating the Future\u2019 2025 was held at the Institute of Science Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This programme is a 10-part industry-academia collaboration based on an original methodology jointly developed by the Institute of Science Tokyo and Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. It aims to create future value by moving back and forth between the perspectives of art, design, science and technology, and sociology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first half of Session 2, we explored philosophical perspectives on envisioning the future through a video lecture by Dr. Betty Marenko of the University of the Arts London. The lecture introduced the idea that the future is not a singular entity, but rather a realm that constantly exists as a multitude of possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we speak of the future, we are strongly influenced by our own experiences and cultural backgrounds. The lecture emphasised the importance of \u2018anticipation\u2019\u2014that is, the attitude of recognising these premises and using our imagination to consider possibilities that do not yet exist. The perspective that the future is not something dictated by others, but something we can shape ourselves, provided a fresh insight for many participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the discussion following the lecture, participants shared their individual insights\u2014such as the danger of viewing the future as a single \u2018correct\u2019 answer, and the importance of holding firm to one\u2019s own ideas rather than relying on a technology-driven future\u2014thereby fostering a shared mindset for contemplating the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second half of the session moved on to practical exercises applying the concepts of the future explored in the first half. First, participants created collages by combining images and keywords that caught their eye, whilst imagining the future in 2035. This task of visualising the future by selecting photos, colours and shapes from magazines was a process in which intuitions and impressions that cannot be fully captured by language alone manifested as works of art, creating a time in which each participant\u2019s vision of the future naturally took shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the group work that followed, participants showed each other their collages, shared the values and interests underlying them, and explored through dialogue how their individual images connected to the future. It was striking to see how the vision of the future branched out in so many directions precisely because each participant\u2019s perspective was different; this provided a space where we could experience and understand the lesson from the first half\u2014that \u2018there are multiple futures\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, as another activity in the second half, we undertook a session using \u2018Philosophical Pills\u2019. This is a thinking tool designed to intentionally shift our envisioned future and generate new perspectives by forcibly introducing a different viewpoint into the future scenarios already created through the collages. Using the values and concepts written on the cards as clues, we attempted to imagine future developments we had not previously considered, thereby avoiding the risk of fixing the future in a single direction and keeping ourselves open to diverse possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the latter half of the session, we came to realise that envisioning the future is not merely an act of prediction, but a creative process that reflects our imagination and values. It became a time for participants to collaboratively create the \u2018multiple visions of the future\u2019 that Hybrid Innovation places such importance on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In HI2025, we are carefully building up our thinking and processes for creating new value by moving back and forth between lectures and practical workshops. Based on the insights gained in Session 2, we will further broaden our perspectives and deepen our ideas in the next session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
