On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Session 9 of the industry-academia collaboration program \u201cHybrid Innovation (HI) 2024\u201d was held at the Institute of Science Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on an original methodology developed in collaboration with Central Saint Martins (CSM) at the University of the Arts London, this program offers a total of 10 sessions that incorporate lectures, hands-on workshops, and facilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Session 9, following a lecture by Dr. Hara on \u2018Ambiguity, Synesthesia and the Polysemy of Human Perception\u2019, each team undertook an HI practice session to integrate and visualise ideas based on their own company themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first half of the session began with an experiential activity exploring how we perceive the world by moving back and forth between multiple senses, such as touch, sight and sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an activity where participants, blindfolded, touched objects inside bags and verbalised the colours they associated with them, different colours and textures were suggested for the same object depending on the participant, allowing us to experience first-hand how \u2018fluctuations in interpretation\u2019 serve as the starting point for creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecture highlighted the differences between human and AI perceptual processes, optical illusions and context-dependent perception, and the potential of new science and technology that utilises \u2018ambiguity\u2019, such as amoeba computing. The human characteristic of interpreting the world by integrating multiple senses and pieces of information is deeply linked to the artistic way of thinking, which allows for diverse interpretations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second half of the session was dedicated to each team reorganising their themes in preparation for the symposium in April and translating them into design briefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of Session 9 was to review all activities to date, articulate what their proposals aim to solve and what value they will generate, and lay the groundwork for moving on to the production of outputs in the final session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the visualisation of text, the structuring of maps and the redefinition of concepts, each team brought together their previous discussions and materials to solidify the framework of their ideas. In particular, the insights gained in the first half of the session\u2014which touched upon \u2018the breadth of human interpretation\u2019 and \u2018ways of thinking that make use of ambiguity\u2019\u2014proved to be a useful guide for reconciling differences in understanding within the teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
