On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Session 8 of the industry-academia collaboration program \u201cHybrid Innovation (HI) 2024\u201d was held at the Institute of Science Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on an original methodology developed in collaboration with Central Saint Martins (CSM) at the University of the Arts London, this program offers a total of 10 sessions that incorporate lectures, hands-on workshops, and facilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Session 8, the first half was devoted to reflecting on the HI London tour, whilst the second half involved prototyping for the HI Practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We began by hearing from those who had taken part in the HI London tour, allowing everyone to reaffirm the insights and lessons they had gained whilst there. It was an opportunity to articulate how the inspiration drawn from experiencing urban spaces, museums, exhibitions and people\u2019s behaviour could be applied to future ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second half, we welcomed Mr Watanabe from PROTOTYPE Inc. as a guest speaker, who gave a lecture on practical prototyping techniques. Drawing on his experience in the creative field, Mr Watanabe introduced key perspectives for navigating the back-and-forth between conceptualisation and implementation, addressing questions such as \u2018why do we prototype?\u2019 and \u2018from what perspective should we give form to our ideas?\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He introduced the concept of \u2018concept prototyping\u2019, which goes beyond simply verifying form and function. The perspective that \u2018prototyping\u2019 serves to explore whether our ideas truly resonate with people and function within society by visualising the mechanisms of products and systems proved to be a significant insight for the teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the subsequent activity, each team began creating prototypes based on their current ideas. Whilst the methods of expression varied from team to team\u2014ranging from paper and models to 3D, video and physical performance\u2014it was an intense session in which every group sought to find a \u2018form that communicates\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
