On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Session 1 of the industry-academia collaboration program \u201cHybrid Innovation (HI) 2024\u201d was held at the Institute of Science Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the HI Team \u2014which has transitioned from Tokyo Institute of Technology to Institute of Science Tokyo\u2014 will continue the program while placing even greater emphasis on innovation research than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on an original methodology co-developed with Central Saint Martins (CSM) at the University of the Arts London, this program offers a total of 10 sessions incorporating lectures, hands-on workshops, and facilitation. Guided by the philosophy of STADHI (Science, Technology, Art & Design Hybrid Innovation), led by Professor Nohara at the School of Environment and Social Science and Engineering at Institute of Science Tokyo, the HI program integrates insights and methodologies from art, design, technology, and science. Through this interdisciplinary approach, the program aims to foster innovation and improve communication in the business world, opening up new possibilities for innovation. Unlike previous years, this academic year features the hands-on \u201cHI Practice\u201d program, which has been conducted as a standalone session from the very first session, deepening participants\u2019 learning by combining theory and practice throughout each session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Session 1, participants first engaged in an activity to reexamine their own \u201cdefinition of innovation.\u201d Through a workshop designed to generate numerous ideas in a short time, they reevaluated the concept of innovation from multiple perspectives and experienced the process of discovering \u201cseeds of innovation.\u201d They broadened the scope of their ideas and shared inspiration born from their unique viewpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Session 1, participants also discussed the importance of an innovation culture, and six essential elements for fostering that culture were introduced. These elements were highlighted as the foundation for promoting creativity and innovation within organizations and teams, enabling continuous innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To foster an innovation culture, the entire organization must be mindful of these elements and adopt a mindset of incorporating them into daily operations. Embracing risk, collaborating, adapting flexibly to change, responding to customer needs with a focus on growth, and maintaining open communication all lead to organizational evolution and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the latter half of the session, information was shared about this year\u2019s HI Practice theme, \u201cRegenerative Design,\u201d and the location, Akiruno City in Tokyo, leading to various discussions among participants based on their current knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
